BMW X3 N47 Intake Manifold Damage

An X3 2.0D E83 LCi with an N47 engine came in for an oil service. And we found black soot covering parts of the engine. Upon closer examination, we found that the intake manifold was severely damaged and needed to be replaced.

To the left of the red arrow on the first image, is the adjuster unit which is situated at the front of the intake manifold. The arrow itself points at where the damage was. And all the debris that can be seen stuck in clumps all over, was blown out of the intake here where these two components meet.

The amount of oil that had accumulated inside this diesel engine’s intake can clearly be seen from the one close-up photo. And the comparison of the new intake to the old one, shows just how much wear this intake had withstood over the years.
